I recently met the mysterious artists behind the ‘Past Use By’ Metcard installation in the foyer of the Adelphi Hotel. Their work, also part 0f the State of Design Festival looked at the paper waste that results from single-use metcards.
The City of Melbourne has unveiled its new corporate identity this week. Designed by Landor, one of the largest marketing and design agencies in the world, the new identity is designed to be “synonymous with the modern, vibrant, cool city Melbourne is today and will continue to be in the future” according to our current Lord Mayor, Robert Doyle. The new logo definitely ticks the ‘cool’ and ‘modern’ boxes but it doesn’t reflect the history of the city and says very little about the lifestyle of its residents.

Also part of the State of Design festival was a competition sponsored by Melbourne company Electrolight. Contestants were given a 1 meter strip of LED lights on a flexible strip and tasked with designing a light fixture that reflects the need for sustainable lighting as Australia phases out incandescent lamps. Entries are on display until saturday 25/7 at Guildford Lane Gallery in Melbourne. Details and directions are on the State of Design website.
I had the opportunity to check out the cloud 19 exhibition at 1000 £ bend in Melbourne yesterday. True to its word Cloud 19 offered an extremely wide variety of artworks and mediums in ‘no one style’.
As part of the state of design festival festival Melbourne company Electrolight is running a competition centered on creating new fixtures for sustainable lighting.
Part of their marketing for the competition was the creation of this silkscreen poster by local design studio Buro North. Details of the production and photos of the printing process itself can be found on For Print Only blog.

I’m all for removing dickheads from companies but the re-brand for Dick Smith Electronics seems a bit light on personality.
The State of Design festival kicks off on Wednesday (15/7) here in Melbourne. The 09 program includes a number of events, exhibitions and workshops focusing on the local design industry. One such exhibition is cloud19 which has its opening night this Saturday with “a futuristic landscape of 15 design disciplines fused with electronic music showcasing design creations from over 40 emerging and established designers from Melbourne and Sydney.”
One of the sources of inspiration for the lens flair exhibit posters and the riddip branding was the World of Logotypes compilation by Al Cooper (first published 1976).

I thought I’d kick things off by showing the design process for the Riddip logo and branding for the business cards. I wanted to create something simple, monochrome that incorporated my initials RDP. The black and white colour scheme is a reference to my first photographic work and the logo itself represents the tools of the trade; a button or a lens or a stack of blank CDs.
